Volunteers
The Centre provides a safe space, access to emergency resources, and peer support and programming. If you want to learn more about community resources and various support organizations for women, gain job experience, and a larger awareness of women’s issues, consider giving a few hours a week to your community.
The Nanaimo Women's Resources Centre have a variety of interesting positions available at the Centre and we can find a position that suits your interests and skills.
Our most popular volunteering position is with our Drop in program. This program runs from Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 3pm. Volunteers generally volunteer on shift a week, but there is flexibility in our scheduling if that doesn’t suit your schedule. Drop in volunteers welcome clients into the Centre, where they assist clients in finding resources, familiarizing them with our programs and generally making them feel comfortable in the Centre. You would also help with day to day tasks, such as organizing our donations and making sure there is always coffee on. It is a very relaxed and informal setting.
We also have an events and fundraising committee that meets semi-regularly, depending on what events we are organizing at the moment. Some events we organize every year are the Vagina Monologues, Take Back the Night march/Sisters in Spirit Vigil, International Women’s Day celebrations, Holiday Hampers for families and other social fundraisers.
Our gardening crew works in our Sustainable Living Urban Garden throughout the year. They provide programming that teaches women and young girls about gardens and healthy eating choices, while working on the day to day maintenance of the garden.
If you are interested in the policy and procedure side of the Women’s Centre, the Board might be the place for you. The board of directors meets once a month to discuss the Centre and how to improve our policy, promotion and function at the Centre. They are a passionate and exciting group of women to work with.
If you have grant writing skills, we are always looking for people to take on some of the many grants that we apply for each month.
Any other ideas you have for working with the Centre are always welcome and we can organize unique volunteering and practicum placements that are suited for you.
Each volunteer is required to provide us with a completed:
3. Criminal Record Check
4. Current resume
We are looking forward to meeting with you and having you on our team!
