Nanaimo Women's Resources Centre Pushing its Limits for a Better Future
Centre Celebrates International Women's Day; Wants Nanaimo Residents to Join-in
(Nanaimo, BC) On Tuesday, March 8, thousands will gather to celebrate and honour women for the 100th International Women's Day event, and in Nanaimo, the staff and volunteers at the Nanaimo Women's Resources Centre (NWC) will be marking the day by pushing themselves to the limit.
"Every year we serve more than 1,000 women, many on multiple cases, helping these women push through fears and face their circumstances in a move towards achieving a better life for themselves or their families," said Lesley Clarke, NWC executive director. "So this year we have decided to celebrate this day by pushing ourselves to the near breaking point in order to reach one of our own goals - and we would love for Nanaimo to show their support."
So what will the NWC be doing this International Women's Day? Staff and volunteers will gather at their house on 285 Selby Street and will be dropping to give 20 for every 20 - that is - they will be doing either 20 sit-ups or 20 push-ups for every $20 donated or new member signed to the NWC on that day.
"We are incredibly fortunate to have a strong base of supporters, but like so many non-profit organizations across the country, we could really use a few more," said Clarke "Every day we work to provide women with the tools, education and resource planning to help them expand their social and economic opportunities. We have great programs and services, but there is a lot more we want to do for these women and their families."
The NWC has been acting as an outreach and resource referral centre sine 1981 in Nanaimo and currently serves approximately 150 women each month. Programs and services include housing support, food and clothing resources, counselling, programs for women living on the street and programs for teenage girls in distress. The house on Selby also offers a warm, non-judgemental space for women to gather and find support on their path to recovery.
"We have wonderful women working and volunteering with us, helping support fellow women in this community, but there is a lot more we want to do. On this centennial celebration of women, we hope to see people step up and honour women who have made a difference in their lives. And in donating to the centre or by becoming a member, they will help us continue to provide and increase opportunities to facilitate a desperately needed service in our community,"said Clarke.
For more information about the NWC, visit www.nanaimowomen.com or to make a donation please drop by the centre or call 250-753-0633.

Vagina Monologues
The Nanaimo Women's Resource Centre and the Haven Society would like to invite you to participate in Take Back the Night event and Sisters in Spirit vigil on Sunday October 4th 2009. This date was chosen to pay respect to Aboriginal (First Nations Inuit and Métis) women, who face a particular racialized and/or sexualized violence because of their gender and Aboriginal identity. Take Back the Night is a night when women walk without fear and draw attention to a freedom they do not possess on any other night of the year.
Women and children are welcomed at the Nanaimo Women’s Centre: 285 Selby St (6:30 pm) for food and crafts. The Candle light procession will start at 7:30pm. Supportive men are invited to assemble at Maffeo Sutton Park (8:00 pm) to cheer us on and listen to our words and music. Hot drinks will be served.
Annual General Meeting
The Nanaimo Women’s Resources Society’s will hold its Annual General Meeting on October 23. We will report on our achievements this passing year, discuss the focus of our work for next year, and elect new committee members. This is also a great opportunity for you to meet our members and support the work that we do with women and families.
We recognize the critical importance of community involvement in meeting these challenges and are therefore urging all our members and interested parties to attend this year’s AGM. This annual gathering gives us the opportunity to recognize those remarkable women who have developed and sustained this agency and extend an invitation to those who would like to become involved.

The Vagina Monologues 2008
Feb 16 - 8pm & Sunday, Feb 17 - 2:30pm
V-Day promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their communities.
This year's cast features students, Malaspina faculty, local actors, socially conscious individuals and Nanaimo-Cowichan Member of Parliament, Jean Crowder. Proceeds from box office revenue will be donated to the Nanaimo Women’s Resources Society.

Yvonne Van der Kooi
Visual artists, Yvonne Van der Kooi, Jan Mckegnie, and Iain Mckegnie have been madly painting the set for this year’s Vagina Monologues, a major fundraising event for the Women’s Resource Centre. In keeping with the artistic direction of director ElizaGardener, we have decided on hanging a series of large painted panels (generously donated by local artist Rod Corriani), doors, and windows (donated by Restore – Habitat for Humanity). These large vivid figurative works of woman will create a colourful backdrop for the actors and dancers on stage. The images resonate with the movement, music and monologues presented by the many talented artists. These large artworks which make up the set will be on sale to the general public and all proceeds will go directly to the Women’s Centre. Please come & join us, enjoy a visual feast of movement, music and imagery and take advantage of the opportunity to own a piece of the set and contribute to promoting awareness of woman’s iss
